Good Governance

This Good Governance Policy has been developed using guidance provided by the Cumbria Association of Local Councils (CALC) to support town and parish councils in maintaining high standards of governance. It outlines the principles and practices that underpin how the Council operates, makes decisions and manages public resources responsibly.

As a public body, your council should be committed to accountability, transparency and integrity in all its activities. This policy demonstrates how you should aim to safeguard public funds, comply with legal and regulatory requirements, and ensure that your services are delivered effectively and efficiently for the benefit of the community.

Good governance is a shared responsibility across all members, officers and those involved in the work of the Council. By following this guidance, you seek to promote a strong governance culture, support clear and informed decision-making, and maintain openness in how you engage with residents and stakeholders.
